As part of CNA Financial’s relocation from its longtime Chicago Loop headquarters to a new 35-story tower, Interior Architects reimagined the company’s iconic slanted logo as a unifying design element throughout the workplace. McGrory Glass partnered closely with IA and its in-house print and lamination teams to bring this vision to life, translating the logo’s distinctive angled forms into custom-printed glass that balances branding, privacy, and daylighting. The result is a workplace where architectural expression and functionality intersect, using glass to reinforce CNA’s identity while supporting a more collaborative and contemporary work environment.

When designing spaces for their clients, architectural firms have to balance a number of design considerations. Open environments that foster collaboration, private spaces that allow solo work, natural lighting that creates a sense of well-being, and the ability to reflect the client’s brand within the space.”
“Over 100 years old, CNA Financial is one of the largest commercial insurers in the U.S., providing services to businesses and professionals here and in Canada, Europe, and Asia. Relocating its Chicago Loop headquarters from the iconic tower it had occupied since 1973 to a new-built, 35-story tower nearby was an opportunity to transition its workforce, steeped in tradition, to a more collaborative culture in a strongly branded state-of-the-art work environment,” summarizes IA Architects in their case study located here.
“The robust capital letters CNA, slanted 70 degrees from vertical and rendered in red, which make up the firm’s logo, are literally reinterpreted throughout the site in a series of complex patterns and large and small gestures that touch every aspect of the headquarters’ architecture, design features, and furnishings.”
Working closely with our in-house print team and lamination crew, McGrory Glass translated the design intent into brand-patterned, logo-imbued glass throughout the offices.
“Glass is one of the most versatile building materials, and when paired with custom-printed interlayers by McGrory Glass Systems, it can achieve several design elements all in one solution. In the case of CNA, custom glass partitions were used for their ability to separate the space. The custom-printed graphics within were designed by Interior Architects to provide a level of privacy while still allowing light to flow through the space and certain sight lines to remain open. IA took it a step further by orienting the print at an angle to match the brand-specific slanted ‘N’ in ‘CNA.’”
All of these design elements are easy to achieve when working with glass, and McGrory’s single-source ability to design, print, and manufacture gives architectural firms an unlimited combination of solutions right at their fingertips.
