When BDG Architecture + Design conceived the new 157,000-square-foot, six-level U.S. headquarters for the LEGO® Group in Boston’s Back Bay, the core challenge was balancing playful, brand-forward imagination with the sophisticated demands of a modern corporate hub. To transition 800 employees from their former Connecticut base into a dynamic, multi-floor collaborative environment, the design team utilized a strategic “clutch power” concept—much like interlocking LEGO® bricks—to connect active interior social zones with perimeter workstations. This intricate architectural puzzle required premium building products capable of safeguarding occupants without compromising the fluid visual connectivity of the workspace.
McGrory Glass helped meet this design challenge by providing slim-frame Forster steel-framed smoke-rated assembly systems and double smoke door pairs and hardware tailored to complement the building’s striking interior layout. Each floor of the hub features a distinct, vibrant color identity—ranging from lush greens reflecting Boston’s Emerald Necklace to signature corporate oranges and pinks—juxtaposed with neutral, high-focus work zones. McGrory’s architectural glazing solutions allowed the design team to maintain an expansive, open-concept feel while meeting rigorous commercial life-safety codes.
