Building Imagination: High-Performance Framed Glazing Systems for the LEGO® Group Boston Hub

When BDG Architecture + Design conceived the new 157,000-square-foot, six-level U.S. headquarters for the LEGO® Group in Boston’s Back Bay, the core challenge was balancing playful, brand-forward imagination with the sophisticated demands of a modern corporate hub. To transition 800 employees from their former Connecticut base into a dynamic, multi-floor collaborative environment, the design team utilized a strategic “clutch power” concept—much like interlocking LEGO® bricks—to connect active interior social zones with perimeter workstations. This intricate architectural puzzle required premium building products capable of safeguarding occupants without compromising the fluid visual connectivity of the workspace.

McGrory Glass met this challenge on every level by providing advanced Forster steel-framed fire-rated assembly systems and double door pairs tailored to complement the building’s striking interior layout. Each floor of the hub features a distinct, vibrant color identity—ranging from lush greens reflecting Boston’s Emerald Necklace to signature corporate oranges and pinks—juxtaposed with neutral, high-focus work zones. McGrory’s architectural glazing solutions allowed the design team to maintain an expansive, open-concept feel while meeting rigorous commercial life-safety and fire protection codes.

Throughout the headquarters, these fire-rated double doors act as transparent safety barriers in high-traffic transition areas. In the pastel-pink elevator lobbies—flanked by custom LEGO®-brick lift signs—clear-vision Forster steel door pairs elegantly secure the floor plate while welcoming visitors with custom line-art minifigure decals. Similarly, adjacent to secure entrance turnstiles and the interactive primary-colored timeline walls showcasing company history, the minimalist profiles of the Forster framing blend seamlessly into the corporate architecture. By integrating high-performance life-safety systems with top-tier aesthetics, McGrory Glass helped ensure that the LEGO® Group’s Boston Hub remains a safe, compliant, and deeply inspiring environment built for generations of innovation.
